Salt + Shears: Haircuts with DIGNITY
At Salt + Light, we believe that everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and cared for—and sometimes, that starts with something as simple as a fresh haircut. Through Salt + Shears, our haircut initiative at The Neighborhood Village, and with the support of generous local hairstylists and barbers, we’re able to provide free haircuts and beard trims to our neighbors—both inside The Neighborhood Village and out on the streets of Tulare County.
With the summer heat approaching, fresh cuts have brought much-needed comfort and confidence to many. Our team has been showing up at places like the Tulare Cares encampment and other outreach locations, making sure neighbors feel refreshed and cared for.
Recently, one of our Care Support Specialists shared that several neighbors were in need of haircuts—some preparing for court, others simply wanting to feel a little more like themselves. Another team member reached out to a stylist friend, who showed up in a big way, offering her time and talent to give nine neighbors fresh cuts. One neighbor even donated his long, well-cared-for braid to Locks of Love, turning something deeply personal into a meaningful gift for someone else. It was a day full of kindness, connection, and renewed confidence.
We’re also excited to share a new partnership with the owner of Stay Handsome Barbershop, who has opened his doors to neighbors who haven’t had access to a real barbershop in a long time. On day one, three haircuts were given (two pictured!), and the joy was undeniable.
Whether it’s in a barbershop chair, on a sidewalk, or in the heart of The Neighborhood Village, these moments remind us what community is all about: dignity, care, and showing up for one another.
