From Experiencing Homelessness to Being Hopeful

From experiencing homelessness, to being hopeful, Alicia's story stands as a beacon of resilience and strength. Once living in the Tulare encampments, Alicia's journey from homelessness to finding housing is a testament to the power of perseverance and the support of community.

"I was experiencing homelessness for a few years," Alicia shares, reflecting on the challenges she faced. "Being homeless definitely makes you see everything in a different way. It is a struggle." The uncertainty of not knowing where to set up, the constant fear of losing everything overnight - these were the harsh realities she navigated daily.

Over the last 2 years, Brody (S+L Peer Support Specialist) and Henry (S+L Outreach Manager) have been able to build a strong relationship with Alicia through the food truck. In January 2024, with the assistance of the neighbor care team, Brody successfully got Alicia housed in Porterville. Alicia revels in the simple joys of stability. "I love being able to shower whenever and however many times a day I want," she says with a smile. "I can actually leave my things everywhere and not have to worry."

Despite finding housing, Alicia remains deeply committed to serving her former community in Tulare. She has found an avenue to give back through Neighbors Feeding Neighbors, a Salt + Light initiative to keep neighbors fed on days the food truck is not at the encampment. "Having the main role in it means a lot to me," she expresses. "Just knowing Henry has that much trust in me."

Alicia's dedication is unwavering. Commuting from Porterville to Tulare twice a week, she ensures that those still experiencing homelessness receive support. "I always make sure it fits in my schedule with Salt + Light," she emphasizes.

When asked about the challenges she's overcome, Alicia's advice is simple yet profound. "No matter what obstacles and challenges you face every day, remember there are better days to come," she urges. "Never let one bad day bring down the faith in what tomorrow may bring."

For Alicia, the team at Salt + Light has been instrumental in her journey. "Your guys’ team members always make sure to give advice and help out in every way possible," she acknowledges gratefully. "They were there for me not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally, and that’s what motivated me to push for a better tomorrow."

As Alicia continues to build her life anew, her story serves as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, the collective support of those around us can become a catalyst for belonging and finding oneself again.
