Beyond the Classroom: SJVC's Volunteer Experience

"The SJVC nursing program leadership submitted to the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) to have this experience [volunteering at Salt + Light] count as clinical hours, not just volunteer hours–as if these students were at the mental health hospital,” Mary Ann Laufer, Salt + Light volunteer, and esteemed faculty member and mental health educator at SJVC says. Salt + Light recently received recognition from the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) as an essential clinical experience and Mary has spearheaded the program leading her students into a greater understanding of our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

Mary’s vision with her students aims to cultivate empathy, understanding, and a sense of responsibility toward those facing mental health challenges. As students participate in this remarkable initiative, they not only enrich their own lives but contribute to a more inclusive and understanding community as well.

Before volunteering, Jasmin and her classmates had certain expectations. She admits they thought it would be similar to a soup kitchen, but their perceptions quickly evolved.

"After going on the food truck," Jasmin reflects, "It broadened my thoughts of the community around us, including our neighbors." On the food truck, Jasmin and her classmates were met with smiles, curiosity, and a genuine desire to connect. "They were so welcoming," Jasmin says. "It allows you to connect more with them as individuals. They have a story as well; it's not just 'Oh, that's your lifestyle and that's what you want.' That's just not how I see it anymore."

Jasmin is one of 35 student’s whose eyes were opened to the world of people who are hurting and in need of belonging. Through their interactions with neighbors they served, students discovered the value of recognizing humanity in every individual and the importance of breaking down stereotypes. In the end, Jasmin and Mary’s story serves as a reminder that meaningful lessons are often learned outside the classroom, in the field, through the stories of those they serve.

Consider volunteering with Salt + Light today, and be part of the transformative power of connecting and building relationships with our neighbors!
